West Sussex County Council said the works – including changes to the existing bus gate and extra signage – are planned for spring.

The announcement comes after Thelton Avenue resident Gary Chester called for action to stop cars cutting through.

The road underwent major works which started in 2019 and finished early last year. The A281 was downgraded and renamed the C622. It was cut off to all traffic except buses and taxis close to the western junction of the Tesco roundabout splitting the road into two sections.

But the 64-year-old says drivers have been cutting straight through since the scheme was completed – despite the road being restricted to buses and taxis only. And he says drivers flout the speed limit on the section of the road they are still allowed to use.

The retiree added: “This is getting crazy. [Cars] absolutely fly down there.

“They totally ignore all the road signs and go through the give way points.”

Gary said the road is busiest during the morning rush hour and that he fears for children travelling to school.

In a statement, a council spokesman said: “West Sussex County Council is aware of concerns relating to drivers on the C622 – Broadbridge Way, disobeying the ‘buses only’ section of the carriageway, which is both hazardous to themselves and other road users as well as contravening the traffic order which could result in a penalty notice.

“To further enforce the existing restrictions, additional works including amendments to the existing bus gate and adding to the existing signage are planned in spring 2021 which we are hopeful will further deter this behaviour.”
