Angmering man cheats death in dramatic mountain rescue

AN ANGMERING man cheated death when he was stranded on a Lake District mountain for more than 13 hours.

Chris Pinder, 19, was climbing Scafell Pike on Sunday (September 9) with two friends as part of his mountaineering training.

However, the group soon fell into difficulties when the weather turned, forcing them to abandon their bid to reach the summit.

The trio were left trapped on a ledge 10ft wide, with a 400ft sheer drop below them.

A fleet of about 20 mountain rescuers, along with two search and rescue dogs, and a helicopter, took on the treacherous conditions to save the stranded climbers.

Chris, a former student at The Angmering School, is said to be recovering in Scotland, following his ordeal.

His father, Roy, of Water Lane, said a combination of poor weather and outdated maps led to the incident.

“It was lucky they were all wearing the right gear, otherwise they could have easily caught hypothermia.

“During my time in the forces, I know just how dangerous Scafell can be.

“But they kept their cool and didn’t flap about – which I’m sure saved their lives.”
