“It was in the branches of the tree, about 50 feet up, and it kept the neighbours up all night.

“He went out to the shops but got diverted. He went up to rescue it and got stuck. As he tried to climb down the branches were breaking underneath him.”

Emergency services were called to the area at about 11am to reports of a young teenage boy 40 feet up a tree.

Fire crews including technical rescue unit officers brought an aerial ladder platform to the scene to help the boy down.

The neighbour added: “They had to harness him to the tree and get him down that way. It was like watching television.

“He was as white as a sheet, the poor lad.”

The cat was later rescued using a crane and rope rescue equipment.
