According to Southern Rail, the line from Chichester towards Havant was blocked just before 10am due to a 'rail defect'.

Engineers were due on site at 10.30am.

"If you are travelling from Chichester towards Portsmouth and Southampton then you should delay travelling until later if you can.

"If you have to travel now then your journey will take longer and you will need to use alternatives so you should allow plenty of extra time."

Network Rail Kent and Sussex revealed the cause of the disruption as a broken track in Bosham.

A spokesperson said on Wednesday afternoon: "We're aiming to have the line open again between 12 and 1pm after we've got clamps put on and we'll come back overnight to complete repairs."
