The video was captured at Littlehaven Station, Horsham, in 2011 and is part of Network Rail’s ‘No going back’ campaign to stop people trespassing on railway lines.

It shows a man cycling along the platform before throwing his bike to the floor and making a quick dash along the tracks.

He stumbles and almost gets struck by an oncoming train with the vehicle missing him by a matter of seconds.

The man was arrested and prosecuted for malicious intent.

He was sentenced to four months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months and required to undertake 120 hours of unpaid work.

Another hard-hitting film has also been released by the railway provider telling the story of schoolgirl who is playing with her friends near the tracks.

The new campaign is being targeted at children aged 12 years and older across the country to remind them of the dangers of railway tracks.

Nicola Dooris, part of the team who created the film, said: “Films like these are a great way to engage school children and really bring home how dangerous the railway can be. Many schools are located close to the railway track so we believe the behaviour shown in the film is something all children can identify with.

“We hope that everyone who sees this film will be able to put themselves in the character’s shoes and realise that messing around near the track can have very dire consequences.”

Over the last five years there have been more than 1100 trespass incidents on the railway.

Of these trespass incidents 142 have resulted in fatalities with 70 per cent of those involved being struck by a train.
