Delay for £12m Littlehampton flood defence scheme

LITTLEHAMPTON’S £12m flood defence scheme has been delayed by a year, the Environment Agency (EA) confirmed this week.

However, the agency insisted the massive civil engineering project remained a “high priority”, and that site investigations along the River Arun would begin next month in preparation for the work.

Andrew Gilham, the EA’s flood and coastal risk manager for Sussex, said the complexity of the design, which had to be married up to £1.3m of enhancements funded by Arun District Council, was the cause of the delay.

“We want to make sure that, with a very complex project of this nature, we get the design right, so we can get the best value for money and deliver the best possible scheme to protect vulnerable properties in the town.”
