Ice causes collisions on A24 near Ashington and Washington

Ice is believed to have contributed to several collisions on the stretch of road near Washington and Ashington, Sussex Police said.

Two cars were involved in separate collisions at the same location at Basing Hill, Ashington, just south of the Ashington junction.

A car travelling north on the dual carriageway was involved in a collision with a barrier on the central reservation at about 6.50am before a second vehicle crashed, but no one was injured.

At about 7.50am a Fiat 500 collided with the central reservation just north of the Washington roundabout. The female driver is not thought to be injured.

A Citroen C3 collided with a barrier near Ashington at about 8.20am. The woman driver was shaken but unhurt.

Acting sergeant Phil Badman said: “Sub zero temperatures are affecting even main roads. If motorists have to scrape windscreens before setting off it means there is ice about and they should slow down and adjust their driving style accordingly.

“Even with the sun up, stretches of road are still icy and care needs to be taken. Advice on winter driving can be obtained by logging on to www.sussexsaferroads.gov.uk”
