A woman motorcyclist is seriously ill at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, after her bike crashed into bollards on the A26 near the Cliffe Industrial Estate, Lewes, yesterday (Thursday October 9).

The accident happened at 4.15pm and the woman, 25, from Eastbourne, suffered serious head and leg injuries.

The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance was called in and the A26 was closed between its junction with the A27 Lewes by-pass at Southerham Roundabout and the northern portal of the Cuilfail Tunnel at Malling Street.

Traffic jams built up in all directions around Lewes as emergency services dealt with the incident.

The road was finally re-opened almost three hours later at 7pm.
