The poll ran for a month, and a grand total of 6,700 people cast their vote, with two choices leading the way.

We asked: “Which of the five A27 options do you want to see taken forward as the best solution for Chichester’s traffic issues?” and the results were:

Option 1: 16 per cent

Option 1A: 3 per cent

Option 2: 36 per cent

Option 3 1 per cent

Option 3A 2 per cent

None of them 42 per cent

The final result was extremely close, with ‘None of them’ just shading ‘Option 2’ by 4 per cent.

Three readers have complained that the Observer poll is flawed because it is possible to vote more than once. That is true. There are ways of voting more than once for anyone determined to do so (eg clearing the cache, or voting on other devices), however as we have stressed several times this is an unofficial poll to gauge the general feelings of our readers. It is not endorsed by Highways England and is not part of the formal consultation.

The official Highways England consultation is open until September 22 and a number of public exhibitions are yet to take place.
