At about 3.45pm on Tuesday (5 May) staff discovered a fire had started in the science block of the school in Love Lane, Rye.

“Thanks to their quick actions and the work of firefighters, damage was limited to a science-preparation room and the adjacent staff room,” said a police spokesman.

“No estimate for the value of the damage has been made yet.”

Police are investigating the incident with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and are trying to determine how it started.

Detective Constable Chris Milner said: “Thankfully, the fire was put out before it had a chance to spread throughout the building, which would have caused extensive damage.

“The pupils had finished lessons for the day and most had already gone home before the fire was discovered but there were still some around who we hope could be able to help us piece together what happened.

“We need to speak to anyone who was at the school at about 3.30pm on Tuesday that we have not already spoken to in case they saw anyone acting suspiciously.

“We are keeping an open mind about the cause of the fire and I would urge anyone who knows anything at all about what happened to contact us.”
