Sussex Police have launched an investigation after a driver of a car involved in a collision on the M23 left the scene of the incident.

The AA reported that following a crash on the M23 near Crawley, queues of traffic formed causing severe delays to motorists on Tuesday, September 17.

The M23 southbound between junction 9 Gatwick Airport and junction 11 A23 Pease Pottage saw delays of around 13 minutes with a reported average speed of 15 mph.

National Highways also confirmed that the left lane was closed on the M23 southbound between junctions 10 and 11.

A 46-year-old woman from Southwater, near sustained slight injuries following the collision but did not require hospital treatment, Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “Police responded to a collision on the southbound carriageway of the M23 near junction 10 shortly before 5pm on Tuesday, September 17.

“The collision involved a blue Skoda Octavia and a black MG 5.

“One driver did not remain at the scene of the collision and left the area on foot.

“Officers are investigating, and have appealed for anyone with information such as CCTV or dashcam footage of the vehicles in the area at the time to come forward.

“Information can be reported to Sussex Police online, quoting serial 1046 of 17/09.”
