Registered charity Havens Community Cars (HCC) is now recruiting drivers for the scheme which launched in January. Drivers will volunteer a small amount of time each week to drive people who aren’t usually served by public transport to enable them to go to healthcare appointments, social gatherings, training, volunteering, and more.

Chairwoman of trustees Paula Woolven said: “There is a proven need for a community car scheme serving the Havens area to transport people to places like Brighton, Eastbourne or even Haywards Heath hospitals - areas not already served by existing providers - and other venues that people unable to use public transport find it hard to get to.

“I am very excited that this scheme is going ahead and would like to thank all those supporting us with our new charity.”

The Havens Community Hub, a not-for-profit organisation founded to support and create community groups and projects, launched HCC with support from local crowdfunding and the National Lottery Awards For All scheme.

Volunteer drivers are currently being recruited and trained and it is hoped the service will be open to passengers from March or April.

Lewes District Lottery is also supporting the scheme with 60 per cent of ticket sales going to local good causes.

Volunteer car driver schemes aim to enable registered passengers to travel with ease, convenience, and peace of mind, allowing them to retain independence whilst reducing social isolation.

The schemes are designed for people who find it difficult to use public transport.

Although several of these schemes exist in East Sussex, the coastal area between Saltdean and Seaford lacks such services.
