A Sussex Police statement says that the casualty, a 53-year-old man, had been eastbound on the A27 Chichester by-pass at 7.50am.

He was 200 metres west of its junction with the A259 Cathedral Way when he moved to avoid a white Ford Transit van, which continued unaware.
