Strong winds blaze a trail of destruction

STRONG winds have left one road in Climping partially blocked this afternoon (Tuesday, September 6) after a tree collapsed onto it.

The tree collapsed in Church Lane, near Climping village hall’s playing fields, and is currently obstructing the northbound route into Ford.

West Sussex Highways Agency is now in attendance and is advising road users to be cautious when travelling down the lane.

Fences in Apple Tree Walk, also in Climping, have been damaged by the winds, that reached a high of almost 50mph. A 15m stretch of fence panelling, from one house, was ripped out and is currently still blocking the pavement and road access into the street.

The newly-fitted roof of the Littlehampton Arcade has also suffered, with several polycarbonate panels getting blown away in the gusts.

Fire services were also called out this morning to the Barnham Windmill, in Yapton Road, following reports that one of the mill’s wooden tail rotors had come loose, due to the heavy winds.

The area has since been cordoned off.
