Mum Fee Packard wrote that Chaffinch Road is particularly dangerous, with people parking on the pavements. "My own child got knocked off her feet by someone opening a car door straight on to her and an adult got knocked by a car this week - it’s only a matter of time before a fatality happens."

This comes after we asked Eastbourne Herald readers which roads they felt needed to be made safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Aside from Chaffinch Road, many other readers mentioned roads around schools, such as the school entrance around The Hydneye, Hampden Park.

The roads around Ocklynge were highlighted by Denise Rogers who wrote: The roads around Ocklynge at school run time, mainly Farlaine Road, Victoria Drive and Baldwin are very dangerous but that’s mainly due to people parking on double yellows, zebra crossing zones and on pavements. Top end of Cobbold Avenue is bad by Cavendish, also the parking on Willingdon Road by Cobbold Avenue junction, not on double yellows but is too close to junction and blocks view of oncoming traffic making it dangerous."

"Victoria Drive junction with East Dean Hill and the road by Asda roundabout going towards Pevensey Bay needs traffic lights as a lot of school kids use it," wrote Matt Zalman.

While Tasha Holford suggested a zebra crossing was needed in Adur Drive by the entrance to the park to make it safer for children to cross.

A number of 'race tracks' were highlighted, such as Milfoil Drive where 'most of the time it's like drivers are qualifying for the F1'; The Hydneye; Sevenoaks Road; Astaire Avenue; and Victoria Drive, from Sainsbury's local to the East Dean junction.

How to make roads safer for cyclists and pedestrians was something many readers discussed on the Facebook thread.

Iain Brogden wrote: "For cyclists, start by taking out the dangerous infrastructure such as the trapping points on Larkspur Drive and opposite Lidl on St Anthony’s. Also the narrow painted lanes on Willingdon Road, the bizarre painted lanes that start/stop in the door zone of parked cars in Devonshire and many more I could mention. Once that’s done, consult with experts and actually listen to them this time, to avoid repeating the money wasting incompetence seen so far.

"For pedestrians, close off rat runs such as Park Lane, clamp down on anti-social driving in residential areas, install footpaths where there are none currently, ensure safe walking routes between all areas of town, install crossings where needed, provide bridges not crossings on faster busy roads, stop morons driving onto and parking on pavements."

While Ray Blakebrough suggested stopping cyclists from using pedestrian spaces, such as the town centre and promenade.

He added: "Use those roads that are wide enough such as The Avenue to build cycle lanes. Likewise from the Carpet Gardens up to Holywell it’s wide enough for dedicated cycle lanes. Close Grove Road and South Street - cyclists could use existing carriageway whilst pedestrians use the pavement. Traffic calm cyclists and motorists on the approach to pedestrian crossings by using textured and reflective material. Ensure traffic lights are set to maximum allowed time on red for older and disabled people to cross safely."

Rachel Grant said the roads around Seaside Rec were dangerous, with cars parked on pavements, while New Road, Hellingly; St Anne’s Road; and Dallington Road were all mentioned by readers.

Fixing potholes all over the town was raised a number of times, including the potholes in Jevington and one at the junction of Pensford Drive.

Rhohima Ali mentioned the 'awful dip approaching Cavendish Bridge' which 'breaks car suspension and will send a cyclist flying'; while Eileen Alexander wrote: "Park Road, Hailsham - no street lights, a new school built, multiple bends in the road, with construction site traffic from multiple developments in the area, and that's without stating the state of the road."

The A21, St Philips Avenue, Victoria Drive, The Avenue, Cavendish Avenue, Priory Road junction with Netherfield Avenue, and Lindfield Road were all named as dangerous roads.
