Temporary traffic lights which have caused chaos in Eastbourne since last week are being removed this afternoon (Tuesday, May 21).

The four-way traffic lights were placed at Marshall Roundabout in Hampden Park on Thursday (May 16) afternoon with just a few hours’ warning ahead of ‘urgent repairs’ to a gas leak.

Over the weekend, Josh Babarinde, Eastbourne’s Liberal Democrat candidate for MP, called the works ‘total carnage’, and urged SGN’s CEO to ‘pull out all the stops to end this standstill’.

A recent update from SGN stated that the traffic lights were ‘expected to be removed today’, but couldn’t provide a timeframe. However, in a post on social media, Mr Babarinde has said the traffic lights are ‘being removed as we speak’.

Dan Brown, a spokesperson for SGN, said: “Our engineers completed urgent gas network repairs in Marshalls Road over the weekend and we’re now working to restore the road surface around our site to its original condition.

"This resurfacing work is expected to finish today, enabling the safe removal of the lights.

“We’d like to thank road users and local businesses for your patience and understanding while we completed this essential work to ensure a reliable gas supply is delivered to nearby properties.”
