UPDATE: M23 closed near Crawley after serious accident

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) at Surrey Police were assisted by officers from Sussex Police on the northbound carriageway of the M23 this evening (Saturday August 3) following a serious collision involving a motorcycle and car.

The collision occurred at around 5.30pm between junctions 9 (Gatwick) and 8 (M25) in the area of South Nutfield.

A black Yamaha motorcycle and a grey Volkswagen Golf were involved in the collision.

The motorcyclist suffered what are believed to be minor injuries and has been taken to Kings College Hospital in London with his pillion, a woman in her 20s, who suffered serious injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

Both were taken to hospital by the Air Ambulance and their next of kin have been informed.

Traffic was managed while emergency crews attend the scene and a collision investigation was carried out.

The road was fully re-opened around 8.45pm.

Officers have already spoken to a number of people who witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it, but are urging anyone else who can assist with the investigation to contact them on 101 quoting reference P13235361.
