UPDATE: Rustington crash driver “taken ill at the wheel”

THE driver of a car which crashed on the A259 at Rustington this morning (January 26) is thought to have had a heart attack at the wheel.

Police were called to the dual carriageway at 10.55am after the car left the road and collided with a lamppost and road sign near the junction with Station Road. The driver, an elderly man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for three-and-a-half hours while police carried out investigations to establish the cause of the crash, leading to severe traffic congestion in the area.

A police spokesman said: “Our enquiries are continuing and we would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened to contact police if they haven’t already done so. One of the theories that is being looked into is whether the gentleman who died became ill at the wheel of his car.”

Anyone with information should call Sussex Police on 101, quoting Operation Barrow.
