A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “It is believed Mr Etherington suffered a medical episode at the wheel which caused his car to go into the path of the lorry.”

Two 15-year-old boys from Horsham, who were passengers in the taxi, were injured.

Police said one suffered minor injuries and the other remains in the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, with serious injuries.

A 34-year-old from Crawley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled drug as part of a routine check at the scene. He has been released on bail until August 28.
