UPDATE: Woman in critical condition after car and lorry crash

A woman is in a critical condition after a lorry and a car crashed near a village pub, police have said.

Emergency services were called to the B2139 at Houghton Hill, Houghton, near Amberley, at 3.20pm yesterday afternoon (Monday July 18).

Police said a Toyota Avensis was involved in a collision with a DAF artic lorry travelling east near the George and Dragon pub.

A woman, who was driving the Toyota, suffered life threatening injuries, officers added.

Police originally said the woman was 79-years-old but in a statement released today officers confirmed she is 77 and from the Storrington area.

She was flown by Air Ambulance to Southampton General Hospital where she remains in a critical condition, police said.

The lorry driver, a 69-year-old man from Liss, in Hampshire, was not injured.

The road was closed for five hours for investigations and for the HGV to be removed.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact police by emailing [email protected] or call 101, quoting Operation Sedgebrook.
