VIDEO: Homes evacuated after roof of building collapses in St Leonards

Three homes were evacuated and a road was cordoned off after a building’s roof collapsed in St Leonards this afternoon (Saturday August 29).

Old Church Road was closed to traffic from about 12.45pm after the roof of a building near Hollington Methodist Church in Battle Road collapsed.

Emergency services including police, paramedics and the fire service were called but no one is believed to have been injured.

Three nearby properties were briefly evacuated, a spokesperson for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said.

Police established a cordon to make the scene safe.

An eyewitness said: “Some bystanders said it was a building belonging to the church that had collapsed.”

Buses running through Old Church Road were diverted down Telford Road to Battle Road while police and a building inspector investigated.
