Work starts on temporary cycle lanes in Shoreham – in pictures

Photos show work getting started on the temporary cycle lanes in Shoreham today.

Orange bollards are being put in place at the A270 Upper Shoreham Road. Funding for the scheme was granted by the Department for Transport as a measure to promote cycling amid the pandemic and relieve the pressures on public transport. The cycle lane will no longer continue east of the Holmbush roundabout to the boundary with Brighton and Hove after this part of the scheme was scrapped. Campaigners have welcomed the temporary cycle lanes. Clive Andrews, of Shoreham-By-Cycle, said: “We are pleased that Shoreham is finally getting some of the cycle lanes it needs, so more people are given the freedom to make short journeys by bike in greater safety. We’re disappointed that the Old Shoreham Road part of the scheme was cancelled, but we do understand the challenges of this busy stretch of road. We have high hopes that the temporary lanes on Upper Shoreham Road will allow the people of Shoreham to try out an improved road design that makes getting about by bike a safer option for short journeys. Upper Shoreham Road runs near several schools, so there’s a particular opportunity to improve the school run for many families.” However, he added the group had some ‘serious concerns’ about aspects of the design, which it was discussing with councillors.
