TRAVEL ALERT: Major road closed after gas leak in Washington

POLICE have closed a major road near the Washington roundabout after contractors working on a farm cut through the gas main.

Work is being carried out at East Clayton Farm in Storrington Road, Washington (the A283) to transform a barn into a community meeting place.

But work came to a halt at lunchtime today (Tuesday, February 3) when contractors severed the gas main.

Police, the ambulance service and firefighters all attended the farm after the incident was reported at 12.25pm.

A 200-metre cordon was set up and nearby homes have had their electricity cut off while repairs are carried out.

Police have also closed a section of Storrington Road '“ from the Washington roundabout to the junction with Water Lane in Sullington '“ and expect it to remain closed until at least 6.30pm tonight (Tuesday, February 3).
