But the ground in Teville Road is privately owned, with the owner currently working with Worthing Borough Council to remove the group, who have placed a number of caravans on the land.

Amy Mulholland, 32, who works at a nearby flower shop, said the group was ‘polite’ to her when she asked them not to block her car yesterday when parking at the site.

She said: “I park in the car park every day to go to work and I could see there was some caravans parked up. There was someone washing and I asked them not to block me in. That was it but they were fine about it. I am in no way negative about them being there.”

A spokesman for Worthing Borough Council said: “Worthing Borough Council has been made aware of an unlawful encampment at Teville Gate. As the area in question is private land, we are liaising with the landowner to deal with the issue.”
