Travellers moved on

TRAVELLERS who have congregated in Goring were due to be moved on yesterday (Wednesday).

About 10 caravans descended on the greensward between the yacht club and Alinora boat ramp car park in Marine Crescent, on Thursday.

An eviction notice was due to be served by Worthing Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Before arriving in Goring, the travellers had been on a site in Findon Valley but were immediately moved off by police.

They then headed for the greensward in Goring.

Richard Waller, chairman of Goring Residents' Association said: "The police and the council were aware of this as soon as they arrived in the borough, but the earliest they can be moved on is Wednesday after a court order.

"We thought we had got away with it this year but obviously not.

"You will recall that the greensward is one of the areas agreed between Worthing Borough Council and the police to be an inappropriate area and they would be moved on immediately. We await assertive action immediately, if not sooner."

Using new powers, police are able to move travellers on immediately if they are on one of 13 designated sites in Worthing. However, it was decided it would be most effective to go through the courts in this instance.

On Tuesday, a police spokesman said: "One of the reasons the inspector would not have taken the decision to move them off the Goring site was because, although it's not nice for travellers to set up anywhere, complaints from the public were minimal and it was the night.

"The decision was made that we couldn't just keep chasing the travellers around Worthing."
