A TRAWLER got into trouble when it began taking in sea water three miles off Beachy Head.

The bilge pumps could not cope with the ingress of water on board the 38-tonne ‘Jack Hendry’ on Monday evening, July 25.

Crew members on the Shoreham registered trawler spotted an experimental lifeboat passing by on its way to Dungeness – and called for assistance.

Communications between the two vessels were broken so Dover Coastguard asked Eastbourne’s RNLI all weather lifeboat to help.

A salvage pump from the experimental lifeboat was put aboard the Jack Henry which reduced the water level enough for repair work. The lifeboat also had a salvage pump ready in case it was needed.

Jack Henry was escorted to Belle Tout lighthouse by the lifeboat when everything was made safe. The Eastbourne boat then returned to its station and the experimental boat continued its passage to Dungeness.
