TREATMENT PLANT - CPO THREAT

Southern Water is preparing to make compulsory purchase orders (CPO) for land it wants for a huge sewage plant.

This is despite no planning permission being granted.

The 200 million scheme aims to improve wastewater treatment to the Brighton and Hove area.

The CPO notices will be made while the company continues to negotiate with affected landowners to ensure there are no delays in delivering the scheme if, ultimately, planning permission is granted and purchase of land cannot be voluntarily agreed.

The areas subject to the notices are:

l Land at Lower Hoddern Farm, Peacehaven

l The foreshore at Black Rock, Brighton

l Marine Drive, Brighton

There has been fierce opposition to the bid in Peacehaven, which is Southern Water's preferred site.

A previous application to Extend the Portobello waste treatment works at Telscombe Cliffs was rejected following a public inquiry.

If any landowner objects to the CPO being made, it is likely their objections will be heard at a Government public inquiry.
