When Stuart and Megan Fraser went to fill their car up with petrol in Findon at around 11pm last night (September 2), all was well.

But what a difference ten minutes made, as by the time they had returned to their home in Broadwater Street East, a huge limb of a tree had crashed into their roof, ripping through the guttering before landing across their front garden and their neighbours’.

Stuart, 31, said he was in ‘disbelief’ when he saw what had happened: “When we turned the corner, we both didn’t recognise the street. It was such a surreal experience: coming home to see this giant tree in front of our house.”

He added: “We are supposed to be off on our honeymoon today; of course our previous honeymoon was cancelled because of Covid and now this.”

The couple hoped to still go on their long weekend to Cornwall if they can get temporary repairs to the roof, but said the council would need to give them the green light that it was okay.

Having been together for two years, Stuart proposed to Megan, 35, at Castle Fraser in Aberdeenshire and set their wedding date for July 25.

But when the lockdown came into force, it left their plans hanging in the balance.

Thankfully, the rules had relaxed enough that they were allowed to have their ceremony at Highbrook Church in West Hoathly - but with 20 guests instead of the 80 they initially hoped for.

But they were not so fortunate with their honeymoon plans, having to cancel a month-long trip to Johannesburg in South Africa in August.

Despite their spell of bad luck, Stuart remained optimistic.

He said: “Being married is the best part of this.”

Stuart later told the paper that they were able to still go on their honeymoon break, albeit for one day less, and the tree branch has been removed with their roof to be fixed soon.
