Tree planting gives avenue a boost

Six Chinese birch trees were planted along Melrose Avenue, Goring, on Friday in an attempt to improve the road’s appearance.

The Field Place Residents Association used £1,000 of leftover funds from a previous campaign to fund the project.

Anne Romer, chairman of the association, said: “It’s lovely. The neighbours are very happy about it and I’m hoping this will be the beginning in the area and we can plant other trees as funds become available.

“We have been discussing trees at the AGM about them disappearing and somebody said we have got the money in the kitty and everyone thought it was a really good idea. I’m hoping this might encourage other residents associations to do something similar. It’s a good way of making the roads look more attractive again.”

Arboriculturist Mark Warwick worked in partnership with the association to select ten possible locations for the trees, with residents having the final say.

West Sussex County Council is responsible for the trees, which currently stand at around 8ft tall, for the next three years.
