Tribute paid to all who have served their country

Tribute was paid in the first Veterans' Day service in Bognor Regis to those who had served their country in all conflicts.

About 60 people formed the congregation for the occasion held last Sunday at The Hub community centre in the town centre. Representatives and standards of organisations such as the Royal British Legion, Royal Air Forces Association, the Scouts and the Sea Cadets were present.

MP Nick Gibb, Bognor town mayor Cllr Don Eldridge and Cllr Graham Tyler, Arun District Council chairman, also attended.

Lt Peter Clark, the leader of the Salvation Army in Bognor, led the 45-minute long service.

He said: 'It was not just another remembrance day service, though we did remember those who had given their lives in wars.

'People of younger generations can't understand what people went through in the wars. I drew parallels in my sermon between Jesus saying that we should look out for one another and the comradeship that people showed during the wars.

'I said that's what people needed to do in the current world.'

The service, part of a national movement, was organised by Bognor Regis Town Council's events officer, Sue Holmes.

'It is something we want to build upon in the future,' said Lt Clark.
