South Street Bonfire Society paid tribute to dedicated member of the society Barbara Nichols, who died aged 91.

She was an active member of the society for nearly 50 years. In the 1960s and 1970s she was part of the Siamese Pioneer Group that, each Saturday, travelled to Bonfire celebrations throughout the county, winning numerous Best Dressed Society awards all over Sussex.

South Street Bonfire Society stalwart Barbara joined the committee in the early 1970s and remained a committee member until her health forced her to stand down in the last few years.

Almost immediately after joining the committee she became assistant secretary and then became secretary for the society in the early 1980s and remained in post for most of the years up to the late 1990s.

In 1992 she was elected a Life Member of the society.

She was appointed a Director of South Street Bonfire Society Limited in 1977 and remained in post until 2010 when she stood down.

For most of the Lewes Bonfire Nights, in the 1980s and 1990s, Barbara was the Pioneer Chief for the society - leading the processions at the head of the society’s Pioneer group.

Barbara was also a keen fundraiser and manned stalls at monthly fundraising events organised by the society.
