Tribute to Littlehampton champion Angela Bayley

A STAUNCH campaigner until the end, Angela Bayley was planning her next fight while on her death bed.

Angela, a leading member of the Littlehampton Civic Society for more than 20 years, first as treasurer and then as chairman, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, last Monday aged 61.

She leaves a lasting legacy, as a driving force behind the eight-year fight to keep Floyd Cottages, in Surrey Street, from being demolished, which was won, and the even longer battle against the East Bank development, which went all the way to the House of Lords before being defeated.

Her sister, Diane, said: "24 hours before she died, she was telling me what she thought about Climping being abandoned to the sea by the Environment Agency.

"She told me to write it down, and I think she is expecting me to fight it, even though she is not here.

"She was an inspirational person. She had incredible integrity, was a very kind and principled person.

Angela was also a committee member of the Federation of Sussex Amenity Societies and the Federation of Arun District Amenity Societies, as well as the Arun District Conservation Advisory Committee.
