Tributes paid to victim of A22 crash

Tributes have been paid to a 68-year-old Eastbourne man who died in a car accident on the A22 on Monday night.

Anthony Morgan, of Maywood Avenue, died at the scene of the crash, just south of the Boship Roundabout, which happened shortly before 5pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save Mr Morgan, who is believed to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel.

Officers from Sussex Police say his car hit a lamppost on the central reservation and a post mortem was due to take place today (Friday).

Mr Morgan’s family have paid tribute to him saying he was a much loved husband, father and grandfather who had a heart of gold.

His widow Coral said, “He was my life time soul mate who I was married to for 40 years.”

Mr Morgan was a semi-retired plant machine operator and was involved in most construction sites in Eastbourne including building the Arndale Centre, Sovereign Harbour and the Crumbles.”

His family said he was a very well loved and respected member of the construction industry, loved rugby and Formula One and enjoyed reading and doing the Telegraph crossword.

The A22 was closed for some time on Monday as emergency services tried to save Mr Morgan and police began an investigation.

A spokesperson said, “At 4.55pm on Monday, emergency services were called to the A22 near Lower Dicker after a car collided with a lamppost on the central reservation.

“The driver of the black Fiesta, a 68-year-old man from Eastbourne, sadly died at the scene.

“The southbound carriageway was closed, as was one lane heading north, for around two and a half hours while the incident was investigated and the scene made safe.”

An ambulance service spokesperson said, “Ambulance crews attended the scene along with the air ambulance service. Sadly efforts to resuscitate the man at the scene were unsuccessful.”
