Trust recruits ‘high calibre’ Spanish nurses

A recruitment campaign took place in Bilbao, Spain, at the beginning of February which resulted in 31 nurses being offered work by the trust.

Further Skype and face-to-face interviews were held between February 18-21 where 33 more nurses were offered places.

The recruitment drive has been carried out to reduce the number of qualified nursing vacancies, particularly in medicine.

Speaking at the trust’s board of directors meeting, in Worthing Hospital, last Thursday, Denise Farmer, director of organisational development and leadership, said Spanish nurses were targeted as there was a surplus of them in Spain.

She said: “We were told that with all that’s going on in the Spanish economy that there aren’t enough jobs for graduate nurses.

“We are told they are very high calibre, that their training is good and they have a very good level of English.

“We continue to recruit locally but there simply aren’t enough for us.”
