Twilight food event is back for another year

A SEAFRONT food event aimed at boosting regeneration and tourism is to return for another year.

The Sundowners event at Splash Point, on Worthing promenade, will return on Saturday, with five other events planned across the summer.

The event, organised by Jonathan Nulty and Rosanne Fleming of Vice Puddings, will feature a mix of live music, children’s activities and street food from all over the world.

Traders from as far as Steyning and Arundel will take part in the event, which attracts hundreds.

Mr Nulty said: “We love the feel of Splash Point and by working with the cafés nearby, it creates a real family-friendly atmosphere.

“This year, we’ve expanded the range of food on offer, so expect top-quality Thai, French and some other culinary surprises.”

The event was launched last year and saw hundreds of families watching the sunset, while wolfing down burritos, gourmet fish and chips and Spanish paella.

It was organised by the entrepreneurs to purely cover costs, with the focus instead on tourism and regeneration.

Ms Fleming said: “It’s all about trying to put on a community event for families, as there isn’t as much as we’d like to bring food and a family atmosphere together and make Worthing somewhere to come to.

“We want Worthing to be not just a town by the sea but a proper seaside town.”

The team is also trialling a new event on Sunday mornings each month – to be called ‘Sun-Uppers’.

The twist on the twilight version will offer visitors a taste of breakfasts from across the globe, accompanied by live acoustic music and jazz.

The first two events will be on May 24 and June 28, also at Splash Point, from 9am to 1.30pm.

The next dates for Sundowners are May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8 and September 12.

Ms Fleming said there was a small group of people actively setting up events to boost the town.

She said: “There is quite a lot of people in the town trying to do things. There are a lot of events coming up over the summer.”
