Twinning is in good shape as Bognor's links are celebrated

ABOUT 40 people are keen to visit a twin town of Bognor Regis to celebrate the silver jubilee of the link.

The interest, which includes some councillors, in going to Weil am Rhein in Germany was given by Bognor Regis Twinning Association chairman Heather Perrott after she was re-elected chairman for a second time at its latest annual meeting.

She also gave a brief history to those present at the town hall of how Weil – in south Germany close to the Swiss and French borders – became one of Bognor’s three twin towns.

A delegation from Weil came to England in 1987 and visited several south coast towns before they chose Bognor.

The link with Weil led to Bognor becoming twinned with the former East German town of Trebbin.

Heather also gave a report on last year’s activities by twinning association members. She mentioned the future links between Bognor Scouts and youth football teams in its French twin of St Maur des Fosses.

In outlining the social calendar for the coming year, Hilary Nicklin said some old favourites had been kept and new ones introduced.

They included a proposed day trip to Cherbourg. Joint social events with the twinning associations at Littlehampton and East Preston had also been discussed, she said.

The meeting also saw tributes and thanks for the work of founder member and former chairman Wilf Archer, a vice-president, who has stood down.

Another change has seen Thea Sydenham succeeded as secretary by Bob Bonner and Terry Armistead.
