Twins at Queen's birthday treat

TEN-year-old twins Jessica and Maxine Doorey are off to help the Queen celebrate her birthday.

And they didn't even know mum Jackie had sent off their details in the hope they might be chosen to take part in the huge garden party at Buckingham Palace on Sunday, June 24.

Jackie herself realised she'd been successful when a large envelope arrived in the post with ER stamped on the front.

It contained news from Air Vice-Marshal David Walker, Master of the Household, to say they had been nominated to join the party to celebrate British children's literature in the year of Her Majesty's 80th birthday, and promising it would be "great fun".

Jackie could barely wait for the girls to come home from King Offa school to tell them the news.

When they opened the envelope, they found Jessica had been invited to attend the event, taking one other child with her plus an adult.

Two thousand children from the East Sussex area will be going, with one thousand adults - but the Doorey's don't know anyone else who has been chosen to go. The three are already deciding what to wear, and are thrilled by the opportunity.

Jackie, of The Highlands, said: "I read about this in the national press, then looked on the CBBC website where you had to fill in a box to nominate yourself for an invitation.

"I thought I wouldn't say anything in case nothing happened.

"I was surprised this came, there must have been thousands going for it.

"I was just so pleased to think it would be something for them to remember when they are older."

Her daughters are very excited, and have already taken the letter to show their friends at school.

Maxine said: "The next day we showed our class. There was a boy who didn't believe me, but I had the proof so he had to. They were all jealous. No-one else in the school got one, so we were the only ones. Everyone is going to stare at us."

The party will have a Literature theme, so the girls will see some of their favourite characters including Tracy Beaker and possibly Harry Potter.

The Queen will be attending with other members of the Royal Family, and each guest will be given a picnic tea in a souvenir cool bag.

"The unique show is to be broadcast live to the nation from the garden at 5.30, and will feature all the great literary characters in a specially written story.

Jessica said "I am going to show my dress to my class. It is going to be really great ... exciting, but a bit scary because everyone will be staring at us."
