Two dead in horror road crashes

AN ELDERLY woman died after the car she was driving collided head-on with an articulated lorry on the new Angmering bypass on Tuesday.

Fire crews used cutting gear to free the 79-year-old driver from the wreckage of her Vauxhall Corsa. She was given medical treatment at the scene and on the way to Worthing Hospital by ambulance paramedics, but was dead on arrival.

An 80-year-old woman passenger in the car was also freed by fire-fighters and taken by ambulance to Worthing Hospital, where yesterday (Wednesday) she was being treated for multiple injuries. Both women were from the Worthing area.The lorry driver, a 24-year-old man from Shropshire, was treated for shock.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the accident, which happened 100 yards north of the junction of the bypass with Water Lane, just after 11.50am.

The bypass was closed for some time while the rescue services worked at the scene and police began an investigation into the cause of the crash. Diversions were set up around the village, leading to serious tailbacks.

A 36-year-old driver died on Monday evening after his car careered off the road and into a tree.

The man, believed to be from Findon, was driving a Vauxhall Astra on the A283, near Steyning, just before 6pm when he lost control.

His car burst into flames and he died at the scene.

Fire-fighters from Steyning, Storrington and Worthing were called. Crews from Worthing used the hydraulic rescue equipment to free him.

Police closed the road and diverted traffic while the emergency services worked at the scene.

Janine Bell, press officer for Sussex Ambulance, told the Herald: "We received the initial call at 5.55pm.We sent one ambulance and a rapid response car to attend and the helicopter also attended later. Sadly, there was one patient who was deceased at the scene."

There were no other cars involved and the man had not been identified when the Herald went to print.

A spokeswoman for the police said: "An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing and Sussex Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them on 0845 6070999."
