Two Horsham services for wartime heroes

On Sunday November 9 Horsham Rev Canon Guy Bridgewater, the vicar of Horsham, will lead the Remembrance Sunday commemorations starting at the war memorial in the Carfax from 10.50am.

There will be traditional hymns, the two-minutes’ silence at 11am and Horsham District Council chairman Brian O’Connell, will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of the Horsham district.

He will be followed by Mr David Copestake, chairman of the Royal British Legion Horsham Branch and Horsham MP Francis Maude. Representatives of the armed services and youth organisations will also lay wreaths.

A church service will follow at the Parish Church of St Mary The Virgin in the Causeway, Horsham to which everyone is invited. There will be similar services at churches across the district.

Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) will also hold its annual shorter ceremony at the War Memorial in the Carfax in Horsham on Tuesday November 11 for those who wish to remember at the ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’. St Mary’s CofE Primary School in Horsham will bring 120 pupils to the War Memorial to witness this. Mr O’Connell will lay a second wreath and the children will planting 12 remembrance crosses.

l On Sunday a Remembrance Parade will be held in Billingshurst, ending at the village war memorial for a short service when the names of the fallen who appear on the Memorial are read out followed by a two minutes silence at 11am. The parade will file into the parish church for the main Remembrance Service, and afterwards will march back to Billingshurst Community Centre.

In the evening the Billingshurst Branch of The Royal British Legion will hold its Annual Remembrance Day Songs of Praise in the Billingshurst United Reform Church commencing at 6-30pm.
