Two injured in violent assault

TWO men were injured during a violent assault in Battle town centre on Saturday night.

The two men, aged 53 and 20, were walking along Upper Lake when they got into a dispute with two men in a passing car just before 9.15pm.

The victims were then punched and kicked in Lower Lake by one of the men in the vehicle.

The car drove off towards Battle.

Police questioned the man and he was released on bail until June 6.

Rumours were flying around the town earlier in the week that someone had been stabbed in the incident.

But the police now appear to have quashed this rumour.

At a meeting of Battle Town Council on Tuesday evening, one Police Community Support Officer said the incident had initially been treated as GBH, but later downgraded to actual bodily harm.

She also stressed that the incident was not linked in any way to the nearby Chequers pub.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
