Two men charged in connection with Worthing armed robberies

TWO men have been arrested after a series of armed robberies at shops in Worthing during November and December.

On Thursday, December 17, two men were arrested on suspicion of committing the robberies and interviewed at Worthing police station.

The suspects' homes were searched and property recovered linking the men to the robberies.

Tony Calderwood, 37, of Mill Road, Worthing, was charged with four robberies, an attempted robbery and possession of a bladed article.

He appeared before Chichester magistrates on Saturday, December 19, and was remanded in custody until March.

Mark Standing, 44, of Rowlands Road, Worthing was charged with handling property stolen during one of the robberies. He was bailed to appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court on January 1.

The charges relate to a robbery at Co-op in Rowlands Road on Tuesday, November 10, when staff were allegedly threatened with a knife; a second robbery at MetroBet, in Montague Street, on Sunday, November 15, when a cashier was threatened with a knife; a third robbery at the Thresher's store in Rowlands Road on Thursday, November 26, and a fourth knifepoint robbery at Alldays in Goring Road on November 27.

The charge for attempted robbery relates to the Londis convenience store in Aldsworth Parade, Goring, on Thursday, December 10, when a masked man wieled a knife but left empty-handed.

Detective Sergeant Alex Lowe said: "There is still a lot of work to do in advance of the court case so I am still appealling for anyone with information about the robberies to come forward."
