A 15-year-old boy has been charged with dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent, and driving without insurance or a licence. A second boy of the same age was also arrested but has been released under investigation.

PC Louise Brearley said: “The manner of driving in this case was extremely dangerous putting not only the driver at risk but also his passenger, other road users and the officers attempting to stop him.”

At around 12.50am on Sunday (August 27), police received a report of a Volkswagen Golf which was taken without permission and suspected to have been driven around the Moulsecoomb area.

Roads Policing Unit officers located the vehicle in The Avenue, where it was driven away at speed, according to a spokesperson for Sussex Police.

Following a twelve minute pursuit – during which the vehicle was speeding and disregarding red lights and other traffics signals – police said their vehicles were able to box in the car.

The Golf stopped in Warren Road at the junction with Tenantry Down Road, where the two occupants attempted to run away on foot before they were detained and arrested.

“The pursuit was brought to a safe conclusion and thankfully no one was hurt,” said PC Brearley.

The second boy, also 15 years old, was arrested on suspicion of being carried in a vehicle taken without consent but has now been released under investigation.

The 15-year-old driver is due to appear at Worthing Youth Court on September 14.
