Uckfield Lions purring with pleasure

Uckfield Lions Club celebrated their 45th birthday with a Charter Lunch at Barnsgate Manor Vineyard, Herons Ghyll.

The lunch was attended by about 100 Lions and partners from Uckfield and 16 other Lions’ clubs in the South East. After a drinks reception, guests sat down to lunch which, they said, exceeded even Barnsgate’s usual high standards.

The top table was hosted by President, Lion Steve Leonard and his wife Sarah. It included the Town Mayor, Cllr Ian Smith and his wife Linda; Lion District Governor Mike Parker from Northfleet and Ebbsfleet club and Lions Bob Eaves, Vice President, and Graham Russell, immediate Past President, and their wives.

In his speech proposing the toast to Lions Clubs International, Lion Steve referred to the national and international aspects of Lionism and the work done for the blind and partially sighted by LIBRA, the Lions blood research charity and its international disaster relief work as well as its 1.35 million members in 46,000 clubs in 206 countries.

In his response, District Governor Mike talked about the service work and fundraising undertaken by Uckfield Lions including support for the Air Ambulance, the all weather football pitch, senior citizens and the housebound; Water Aid to disaster areas and many local charities and worthy causes. In concluding he presented long service awards to Lions Chris Macve and David Egginton and for outstanding service to Lion Chris Sherwood.

The group was entertained by Lion Bob Eaves who proposed the toast to partners and guests. He had also researched amusing anecdotes concerning the home bases of each of the Lions groups.

Mayor Cllr Ian Smith thanked Lions for supporting international and local projects and looked forward to working with them more in the future. To find out more visit their Bridge Cottage bookshop or: www.uckfield-lions.org.uk
