Uckfield pays silent respect

MEMBERS of the emergency services joined the Mayor, councillors, church representatives and members of the public in three minutes silence in Uckfield on September 14.

Mayor Cllr Mike Skinner said a few words before a rocket signalled the start of the silence.

Afterwards the Rev David Ashton from Holy Cross Church asked for God s blessing on everybody affected by the tragedy. He also said a prayer for peace asking that the pursuit of vengeance did not hurt innocent people and was done in a just way.

On Sunday evening all denominations from across Uckfield joined in a special service at Holy Cross organised by Churches Together.

The Rev Brian Wilcox, of Holy Cross, Roman Catholic priest Father David Sutcliffe, Kings Church pastor Robert Thursfield and United Reformed Church representatives Mrs Sheila Charlesworth and Mr Sas Conradie gave readings and said prayers.

The Rev Chris Howarth, deputy principal of Uckfield Community College, introduced musicians from the college and told of links the school has with one in Manhattan.

The Rev David Ashton said up to 300 people attended the very moving service and were invited to light candles. A lot of people came up to light candles. This went on for ever because so many people wanted to take part. The altar was covered in red candles afterwards.
