Last week saw round one of the National Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition.
Winner was Sophie Godbold and runners up were Carys Roberts and Caitlin Mileham.
The 16 entrants from years eight to 12 each had £5 to prepare two courses.
They planned menus in advance then had two hours to prepare, cook and serve the meal. Judges Matt Ridley from The Highlands and professional chef and Rotary member Martin Doyle discussed meals with students before assessing them using specific criteria to monitor preparation, hygiene, organisation of working space, presentation and flavours.
They said the overall standard of meals and presentation was extremely high and judging was not easy.
Sophie qualifies for the district heat next year and hopefully for the regional and national finals held in Wrexham in April.
The heat was organised by Uckfield Community Technology College staff on behalf of the Rotary Club.
