The spectacular gardens and grounds of Fairlight Hall are open to the public for the National Gardens Scheme tomorrow (Saturday) and on Tuesday (August 6), between 10am and 5pm both days. Entry tickets cost £5, children free, very good value, for there’s so much to see and enjoy there, well worth the drive over to Martineau Lane, near the top of White Hart Hill.

Udimore Cricket Club is playing Robertsbridge 2nd XI at home tomorrow afternoon. On current form Udimore should win, maintaining their position at the top of Division Seven of the East Sussex Cricket League, but they will no doubt be glad of your support - an enjoyable way to spend an hour or so on a sunny afternoon too.

There is one service in St Mary’s Church this Sunday, the 9.30am Family Sung Eucharist. This new form of service was well supported last month at its inauguration: it’s to be hoped its popularity will continue to grow. The monthly meeting of Messy Church will be in the Hall at 4pm on Tuesday, as usual.

From Monday till Saturday (August 5 - 10), 10am - 4pm every day, in the new St Mary’s Centre, next to Rye Parish Church, there will be a major exhibition of photographs of Romney Marsh Churches. The photographer, Dr Douglas Moss, has carefully selected images which display both the distinctive beauty and the history of these fourteen churches. The exhibition is free, and well worth including in any visit you make to Rye next week.

Earlier this week most of the potholes along the full length of Float Lane were marked with white paint, encouraging us to hope that this backlog of work, much of it dating back to the winter, is to be cleared soon. Cllr Carl Maynard did indeed assure the Parish Council at its last meeting that all work on our roads is to be completed by next month - and this is to include white paintwork on road surfaces, cats’ eyes and potholes.

Though no burglaries have been reported in Udimore recently, other villages in the area have been less fortunate. So in their recent weekly bulletins the police have been warning us not to relax our vigilance: please remember to keep doors and windows locked when you’re out (or out of view of the house) and always put away securely garden tools or other kit a burglar might find useful for breaking in.
