Udimore

Being away from home, I was very sorry to miss the third annual Brede and Udimore Prose and Poetry Evening in St Mary’s Community Hall last Saturday. I’ve heard that both the admirable choice of readings and the excellent meal were much enjoyed by everyone there. The money raised by this event, amounting to some £600, has been equally shared between St George’s and St Mary’s parish funds.

There’s to be a most interesting illustrated talk about our beautiful local landscape and wildlife this Tuesday evening, March 12, in the King’s Head, starting at 6.30pm. Matt Pitts, the speaker, works for the management unit of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near Flimwell and is a considerable expert on the geology, flora and fauna of the Weald, and the effect on it of human settlement. He has been invited to give this talk by the Udimore Wildlife Society, but it’s open to everyone, free of charge. If you would like to join members for supper in the pub afterwards, please ring 01424 882206 as soon as possible, to make a booking. This promises to be a most informative and enjoyable evening.

At noon on Wednesday, March 13, the first of this year’s Lent Lunches will be served in the Hall. There’s no need to book: just turn up, for a simple soup-based lunch, available till 1.30pm. Donations will be gratefully received by the Brede and Udimore Overseas Group, organizers of this lunch, and of the second one, in St George’s Church, Brede, the following Wednesday, March 20.

Next Friday, March 15, from 10.30am till noon there will be a Coffee Morning and Spring Raffle at Stocks Oast, by kind invitation of Ann and Peter Barker, to raise funds for the Hall. Richard and Sheila Corke have once again generously given a lamb to be raffled, also in aid of the Hall. Tickets will be on sale at the coffee morning, or beforehand (please ring 01424 883515). The lamb will be presented jointed and bagged. All welcome!
