Next Wednesday, May 16, the Annual Parish Assembly takes place in St Mary’s Community Hall, at 6.30pm. At this important event the range of subjects and topics discussed will include something of interest to every one of us.

It will start with presentations by Stuart Harland on the proposed new Fletcher Centre in Rye, and on proposals for our future railway links. Reports by our Parish Council chairman and our County Council and District Council representatives will be followed by an opportunity for us all to ask them questions on any matters of local interest which are of particular concern to us at present. Refreshments will be available. Please make a point of coming along to this event if you possibly can.

The Annual Council Meeting will follow on immediately afterwards, at 7.30pm. After the election of the Parish Council chairman and vice-chairman for the coming year, the various responsibilities of the Council will be allocated to individual councillors. Among the other items on the agenda are discussions on highways and planning matters, and on the Council’s finances during the financial year which ended in April. Please note in your diaries that the next meeting of the Parish Council will be in the Hall on Wednesday July 18, at 6.30pm.

From noon till 2pm next Saturday, May 19, the Friends of St Mary’s Church are holding a barbecue by the village pond, to raise funds for the upkeep of the church. Besides burgers and hot dogs, there will be a licensed bar selling beer, wine and soft drinks, and a tombola. We are of course hoping for a fine afternoon, to enjoy this very pleasant outdoor venue, but we have taken the precaution of booking the nearby Hall, just in case the weather is unkind to us. Either way, this is sure to be an excellent party: the Friends look forward to welcoming lots of you there!
