The third and fourth Lent Lunches arranged by the Overseas Missionary Group will be in Udimore.

On Wednesday March 14, between noon and 2pm, Liz Turgoose will welcome us at Field’s House, for a lunch of home-made soup, bread and cheese. There will be opportunities to make donations to the four wonderful charities which the group supports. At the same time the following Wednesday the group has arranged another Lent Lunch along the same lines, in St Mary’s Community Hall.

Also on Wednesday March 14, at 6.30pm, the Parish Council will meet in the Hall. Among the other topical items under discussion will be the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the replacement of our wind-damaged signpost at the top of Float Lane and the inclusion of more community news in the Udimore website. Members of the public are always welcome at these meetings: you can stay for as long or as short a time as you like.

There are two important events in the Hall next Saturday, March 17.

1) The Diamond Jubilee committee has decided that for the weekend of the celebrations both St Mary’s Church and the Hall are to be splendidly decorated, as befits the occasion. To raise funds for this purpose, from 10am till noon that Saturday the Hall will be the venue for a special coffee morning, home-made, bring-and-buy sale, raffle and Phoenix card stall. Please make a point of supporting this event, or if you can’t be there perhaps contributing items for sale, raffle prizes or a donation to Nadia Florence-Marshall (01424 882948).

2) Dr Nuala Hancock, who will be speaking at the Udimore Gardening Society meeting in the Hall at 2pm that afternoon, is an accomplished garden designer, whose numerous successes include a Gold Medal at Chelsea. Her illustrated talk on gardens which have inspired her in her work will appeal to all of us who have any interest in gardens and gardening. This is a rare opportunity to hear an eloquent and informative speaker on a fascinating subject. Tea and cakes will be served during the meeting, which is open to all. Members will be asked to make a donation towards costs, £2.50 entry for others.
