Southlands ward member Ken Bishop’s decision leaves UKIP with seven Adur district councillors.

Speaking to the Herald on Tuesday, Mr Bishop refused to confirm why he had left the party.

He said: “It reminds me of the Benny Hill song, Ernie. It has the line ‘a woman’s needs are many fold’. A politician’s reasons are many fold.

“I am going to continue to serve my ward members to the best of my ability but no longer flying a party flag and I will reconsider my position for the May elections next year.

“I won’t go into why I resigned from UKIP.”

The ruling Conservative Party now has a majority of three, with seven UKIP, three Labour and three Independents to their 16.

UKIP group leader Geoff Patmore said: “I totally respect councillor Bishop’s decision. I look forward to working alongside him in opposition.”
